Advice from a BSU Student
When coming into college, I prepared all the necessities. My Woozoo fan, storage bins, and—of course—my mattress topper. One thing I wish I had received was advice from an upperclassman. This article will serve as a guide to what I wish I knew coming into college.
As someone who committed her time to sports as a three-season athlete in high school, transitioning to not playing sports was a big adjustment. The biggest advice I can give to anyone coming to BSU is to get involved. BSU offers a variety of intramural sports, clubs, and on-campus jobs. You can even create your own club with the three Fs—a friend, faculty member, and a fun idea. Through involvement on campus, I have meet some of my closest friends, and not to mention it looks great on a resume.
Another tip I wish I had learned was to be smart with your money. With the proximity to Boston and my first taste of freedom, I spent more than I should have my first year. Do a reality check: what is a necessity vs. what is a need?
In terms of necessities, also consider what could be a dorm necessity. One thing I could have left behind was dishware. If you live on the third floor of Shea Hall, you aren’t going to want to trek downstairs to wash your dishes. Buy paper bowls and paper plates. The ultimate hack is taking the leftovers from events with catering, otherwise they just go to waste. In terms of sharing a space with a roommate, it can be hard. Communicate! Discuss your boundaries—when it is acceptable to have people over and volume control. Also, reach out before the school year to coordinate who is bringing what. It’ll make moving in ten times easier.
Make the most of your experience at BSU. Venture out; meet new people; and make your mark as a student.
