Athletics at BSU
Are you looking to stay active on campus—or maybe even participate in a Division III, club, or intramural sport? Bridgewater State has what you’re looking for!
Included in student tuition is one of my favorite facilities on campus: Thornburg Fitness Center, located in Adrian Tinsley Center. Thornburg offers a plethora of fitness equipment from StairMasters to squat racks. Make sure to bring an extra pair of shoes prior to your workout, though, as they discourage outside footwear in the facility. Along with Thornburg, Tinsley has some great secret study spots.
If you’re looking for a group workout or something for you and your friends to participate in, Group X, Bridgewater’s fitness group, offers many classes for you to partake in such as spin class, mat pilates, and a fan favorite, Zumba. With classes running from Monday through Thursday, these are a great alternative to a solo workout.
BSU has many opportunities for students looking to get involved in athletics, offering 10 Male and 11 Female Division III sports and competing in the MASCAC conference. Becoming a student athlete is highly encouraged and open to all students. Student athletes also receive a pretty sick Parka jacket. If you’re looking to join one of the many Varsity sports, reach out to coaches; their contact information can be found at bsubears.com.
If you’re looking to stay involved with athletics but maybe not at a Division III level of commitment, Bridgewater offers a variety of club sports throughout the academic year. Just a few of the club sports offered on campus include women’s ice hockey, men’s rugby, and cheerleading. If you and your friends are looking to stay involved, join an intramural sport! BSU intramural leagues offer fun co-ed team-based opportunities for students. This includes spring soccer; winter floor hockey; and a personal favorite, ultimate frisbee.
Maybe you are like myself and prefer a structured activity throughout your week. Offered in the academic curriculum is a variety of one-credit activity courses. These include yoga; rock climbing; self defense; and for those who enjoy the cognitive aspects, theory and practice courses.
Bridgewater State has involvement opportunities for everyone! Whether you’re just getting into fitness, or you set off the lunk alarm at Planet Fitness, everyone is encouraged to get active on campus.
