Honors program at BSU
The Honors Program at BSU offers a wide variety of opportunities for students to explore their own major and those beyond. There are two separate programs of honors here at BSU: honors in the core and departmental honors.
Honors in the core is typically what you would expect to get started with here during your first few academic years. If you currently have a high school GPA of 3.4 or above, you will be invited to join honors in the core. It is a nine-credit program, meaning you will be expected to take three courses (of any discipline) that have an honors attribute. These classes are smaller than regular classes, leading to better class discussions and more individual attention from professors. Once you pass those three courses, you will have fulfilled honors in the core.
Departmental honors entails you working within the department of your declared major, doing extracurricular projects in upper-level classes called honors contracts and a capstone research project called an honors thesis to fulfill the departmental honors credits. It is also a nine-credit program similar to honors in the core. You can typically customize your departmental honors curriculum to suit your interests in your field and work with any professor in your major that you’ve gotten to know during your time here at BSU.
You do not have to take part in both of the honors programs either; honors in the core and departmental honors are two separate programs that can be done individually, providing students with an opportunity to expand their learning experience while working with like-minded students and faculty.
