Theatre at BSU
Are you a creative person? Do you long for the spotlight and applause? If the answer to one of those questions is at least a maybe, then I implore you to check out the BSU Theatre Department! Here at BSU, the Theatre Department is dedicated to creating a strong, inclusive, and welcoming community that allows creative people from all walks of life to come together and participate in fantastic performances and engaging classes.
With so many courses to choose from, I guarantee that you will find something to love. The department offers a theatre arts major, theatre arts minor, a theatre education major, and dozens of fun and engaging courses. Do you want to learn about voice acting, lighting design, sound design, directing, or stage combat? BSU offers classes for all of these and more. Each professor cares deeply about their subject and works to establish a connection with their students. I can assure you it is rare that you will find a department where you are on a first name basis with most of the professors.
As for the performances, the department puts on multiple shows each year with two main stage productions and several smaller productions. Typically, with a non-musical play in the fall, a musical in the spring, a lab theater production (A class where you help create the show then perform in it), and two SRT (Student Repertory Theatre) shows that are student run. All cast and crew positions associated with performances are practicums worth one credit. The BSU Theatre Department also offers several opportunities for students to do paid work on campus, offering both work study and non-work study positions. So, if you want to get paid to build sets or design costumes, then this is the department for you.
The best part is that you do not have to be a theater major or minor to get involved. I am writing this article as a history major who has worked on three shows, taken three theatre classes, and a one-credit costume design practicum. I have worked on shows with students who major in everything from computer science to education. You are going to need some arts credits to graduate anyway, so knock out those core requirements with some theatre courses and have fun while you do it!
