Christian Gonzalez was originally drafted as the 17th overall pick in the first round of the 2023 NFL draft and signed a standard 4 yearlong contract worth $15 Million. While his rookie season was put to an abrupt halt in 2023 due to a shoulder injury in week 4, Gonzalez had a breakout season in 2024 becoming the only cornerback in NFL history to face 10 or more deep targets without allowing a touchdown during the regular season.
Coming off the Super Bowl loss going into the off season, Gonzalez had expressed increasing frustration and disappointment regarding his contract with the New England Patriots, saying he wished to be “rewarded as a patriot” in early June. New England’s head coach Mike Vrabel would have said multiple times towards the end of the previous season that he hopes to retain Gonzalez and has actively worked to expand his leadership role within the team’s defense. His contract details remained in the air for many months up until September 8th, where he would sign a record breaking $134 Million contract extension to the New England Patriots, officially making Gonzalez the highest paid cornerback in NFL history. The contract would extend Gonzalez’s time on the Patriots for an extra 4 years.
Gonzalez expresses great gratitude to the team and is excited to continue playing for New England. “I’m extremely blessed,” Gonzalez said to reporters after week 1. “Thankful. I love this team, I love Boston, I love the city. This is where I want to be. I’m happy to be here and glad we were able to get it done. Now we’re onto the season.”
