The First Week of School is BRUTAL

Imagine an early Monday morning, and your alarm goes off. The first few rings are when you’re half asleep, so you try to go back to bed. The next few bring you back to reality, but who wants to wake up early? Finally, you shut off the alarm and check the clock… only to realize that you’ve overslept. That’s pretty much what the first week of school feels like.

Let’s start from the top. There are endless possibilities for the semester and a ton of new opportunities for students. It’s kind of like starting a Minecraft world. But, if you’ve played Minecraft, you know that this peace fades away when night comes and monsters begin to spawn. Am I saying that zombies suddenly appear at night on campus? Of course not! They appear during the next day in the form of tired college students.

Our infinite availability dissolves into rows of homework and projects lined up in the syllabus. We begin to get textbooks, and by the weekend, most of us even have a date for a first exam. Going back to our gaming example, I guess you can say ‘the grind begins.’

So, we get to work. We work as hard as possible. We strive for success, and we fight tooth and nail to ensure that we pass! And then, after we’re exhausted and ready for a break, we turn our attention to the calendar… only to find out it’s only been 5 days since the semester started.

It’s Their First Time Living Too

Empathy is defined as “the ability to understand and share the feelings of others.” Empathy though, is so much more than this.
