It was sophomore forward Courtney Pepin that gave the Bridgewater State University women’s soccer team reason to celebrate on its home Swenson Field this past Saturday with the sole score on the afternoon. It was their first victory in four non-conference tries to begin their 2015 campaign.

The 1-0 victory over Plymouth St. improved BSU’s record to 1-3. Pepin joined freshman Caitlin Rowley as the only two Lady Bears to get past the opposing goalkeeper this season.

“Getting our first win of the season gives us confidence to go into our next few games in September and pulling out some more wins,” said second-year head coach Yazmina Carvalho.

The only scoring play of the game came right ahead of halftime. Freshman midfielder Melissa Morton was able to avert the defense and hit Pepin with a lead pass, sending her on a breakaway attempt. Pepin let it fly and beat the goalie to her left side.

Sophomore goaltender Lauren DeSousa was impressive in the victory. She posted a shutout in her first victory in a BSU uniform. DeSousa made three important saves to keep the Bears ahead and allowing them to enter one in the win column.

All corrections need to be made before BSU looks ahead to their conference schedule. Coach Yaz added, “One thing we need to work on is taking all the information that we have been going over since preseason and applying it to our games.”

Come support the Bears as they will begin their Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) schedule Saturday, Sept. 19. They play at home on Swenson Field in Bridgewater, Mass. against Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA). The game will get under way at 4 P.M.
