Freshman Jayci Andrews has a strong start to her BSU track career

Jayci Andrews has taken the field by storm. A young freshman here at Bridgewater State University, Andrews has been running big time; five MASCAC Rookie of the Week honors this season has highlighted that. She won three titles in the 200-meter dash, 400-meter dash and the long jump at the MASCAC Championships, and those weren’t even her personal bests. The sky appears to be the limit for Andrews.

She finished her year strong as well; at the NEICAAA Championships on February 27th, hosted by Boston University, she bested her previous personal best in the 400-meter dash, which was 58.4 seconds, with a staggering 57.14 finish, setting a BSU school record. She followed up that performance at the ECAC Division III Championship Meet with a 57.38 time and a first-place victory for the Women’s 400-meter dash. With a strong finish to the season, Andrews is primed to follow it up next season.

Andrews is not settling for anything, however, saying, “I am not doing as great as I expected to do.”

She is grateful for making Rookie of the Week honors five times, however to her, there’s always more to accomplish. She works out constantly, doing her regular workouts typically on Mondays and Wednesdays, hurdle workouts on Tuesdays and Thursdays, with Friday being the day for meets. She doesn’t take a day off.

Andrews plans to run in the spring, and build upon her already solid start to her collegiate athletic career.

Outside of running, academics are also very important to Andrews. She’s made it a note to limit her workouts so she has enough time for her schoolwork, and is here at BSU studying Early Childhood & Care and minoring in Social Welfare. One day hoping to be a social worker. As she excels on the track, she also works towards making the world a better place, taking on a very admirable profession.

In just her freshman year, Andrews has already made school history by setting a new Women’s 400-meter record with her 57.14 second finish at NEICAAA. One can simply imagine what she will accomplish down the road. The outdoor record for the 400-meter dash is current 58.28, set in 2012 by Co Davis.

Is that record at risk? We will see this upcoming spring. The first outdoor event for BSU men’s and women’s track will be the BSU Bears Invitational on this Saturday, March 26.
