On Nov. 12, the Bridgewater State University Police Department (BSUPD) notified students that an arrest had been made in connection with recent reports that female BSU students had been followed or approached by an older, unknown man.
The Safety Advisory states, “The suspect, a male non-student, has been charged with several criminal offenses. He is currently being held on high bail. A no-trespassing order was also issued.”
He has repeatedly been described as Hispanic, in his early 30s, with dark hair, dark-colored hat, and dark jacket.
Two previous safety advisories were issued via email concerning these reports. In both reported incidents, the male suspect started conversation with the females and touched them without consent.
On the afternoon of Nov. 7, a female student was walking in the center of Bridgewater. She reported that she was approached by an unknown man, who followed her toward Campus Plaza. The male suspect proceeded without permission to hug and kiss her near the Maxwell Library.
Previously, another female student reported that she was approached in Spring Street Lot by an unknown man with a similar description. The male questioned her and caressed her arm without consent.
The arrest has generated concern among Bridgewater State University students. Jennifer Carr, a senior English major said, “I’m really glad they caught him. It’s frightening to be reminded that even on campus we have to be on high alert.”
Along with the two safety advisories, the BSU PD included advice for students to ensure their safety while on campus.
“Reduce the opportunity for crime by planning ahead for your safety, being aware of your surroundings, and looking out for your friends. Use the university’s transportation services,” they said in an announcement. “To report suspicious activity or a crime in progress, please call 911 from any campus phone or 508-531-1212 from your cellular telephone.”
